there’s a chinese exchange student in my composition class and we were being presented something about how you can use brackets to signify translation and there was chinese text on the screen and the prof said to him “what does that say?” and he deadpanned “i can’t speak chinese” and everyone sat there in dumbfounded silence and then the presenter clicked to show that the text literally said “i can’t speak chinese” with the most shit-eating grin on his face

the distinction between “crafts” and “fine art” is probably driven by misogyny and the devaluation of women’s labor

art forms that have traditionally been practiced by women like embroidery are devalued and called just “crafts” while art forms that women historically were mostly barred from (painting, sculpture) are “fine art”

can confirm!! i work at a craft store & the sheer number of women i’ve met who devalue the incredible creations they’ve made (ex: beautiful elaborate needlepoint that took years to do, or a massive art quilt) & call them “just a little craft” is wild. crafts are art. 100% fuck anyone who says otherwise.

embroidery is art. knitting is art. crocheting is art. sewing is art. fashion is art. china painting is art. doll-making is art.

(I bring up doll-making because it’s close to my heart and historically it’s a field where male company owners have taken credit for the work of female artists)

“ the distinction between “crafts” and “fine art” is probably driven by misogyny and the devaluation of women’s labor ” AND RACE. All nonBlack “fine art” is gentrified Black visual output and Black Indigenous spiritual practices. Idc about yts doing “crafts” or “fine art”, both Blackface in some way.
